Msn Error-80048820-80048416

When you try to sign in to Messenger, you receive the following error message:

We were unable to sign you in to the Messenger at this time. Please try again later.
To let us try and troubleshoot the problem, click the Troubleshoot button.
Error code: 80048820
Extended error code: 80048416


PROBABLE CAUSE
This problem occurs because the Microsoft Internet Explorer SSL settings are incorrect.
TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
1. In Internet Explorer, clear the Check for Server certificate revocation (requires restart) check box. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
c. Click the Advanced tab.
d. Under Security, clear the Check for Server certificate revocation (requires restart) check box.
e. Click OK.
f. Exit Internet Explorer.

2. Sign in to Messenger again.

Configuring Windows Live Messenger through other firewalls

1. For steps on how to enable Windows Live Messenger through the most common firewall refer here. If the list does not include all the firewalls you may have on your machine, please follow the steps below.
2. Open the options on your firewall settings where you add/modify list of programs that are allowed to access the Internet through your firewall application.
3. Remove all entries for MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger.
4. To allow Windows Live Messenger through your firewall application follow these steps:
4.a. Open Windows Explorer.
4.b. If you are using Windows Live Messenger 8.1 or 8.0 , browse for Windows Live Messenger by going to C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger. If you are using Windows Live Messenger 8.5 and later, browse for Windows Live Messenger by going to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger
4.c. Select msnmsgr.exe and add it to the list of applciations allowed to access the Internet through your firewall application.

5. Make sure that the Microsoft Internet Explorer settings are configured correctly. Messenger uses the settings in Internet Explorer when it makes a connection to the Messenger service. To configure Messenger, follow these steps: a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. Make sure that Internet Explorer is not set to work offline: On the File menu, make sure that Work Offline is not selected. If Work Offline is selected, click Work Offline.

f. When you receive the message that states that the SSL cache was cleared successfully, click OK.
g. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Restore Defaults.
h. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings. Clear all the check boxes, and then click OK.
i. Click OK to close the Internet Options window.


6. Clear the proxy settings in Messenger: a. Start Messenger.
b. On the Tools menu, click Options.
c. Click Connection, and then click Advanced Settings.
d. Delete the entries under SOCKS.
e. Click OK two times to save the settings.

7. Reregister the SSL security libraries. To reregister each file in the following list, click Start, click Run, type the command, and then click OK.
